The short term risks of substance abuse can be separated in two categories:

* Psychologically, many people with a mental vulnerability will develop a mental addiction.

* Physically, it may cause nausea or vomiting. People with cardiovascular disease are especially at risk.

An overdose of a certain type of drug can be a lethal. A combination of substances can enhance each others effect. For example, ecstasy and speed. The effects are not predictable and can have very dangerous consequences for the human body.

There may be something entirely different in the pills that what the user expects, or very dangerous like rat poison. It may even lead to death.
